Urban Forest Plan Update

To better understand the current needs of the City's urban forest, the City applied for and received a grant from the California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) funded by California Climate Investments in 2018.

The grant project includes a street and landscaped park tree inventory, the planting of 700 trees in flatland communities, and the development of the City's first Urban Forest Plan for the long-term health and improvement of the urban forest.

Project Background

The Plan's development was funded by a grant from the California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), supported by California Climate Investments, and approved by City Council Resolution 87388 in 2018. This grant facilitated a street and park tree inventory and the planting of 700 trees in flatland communities. Reports and analyses were completed to provide baseline information for informed decision-making. It is important to note that the Urban Forest Plan is distinct from the Vegetation Management Plan, which is managed by the City's Fire Department and focuses on reducing fire hazards.

Purpose of the Plan

  • Develop a maintenance plan and budget to care for all trees growing on City-owned property.
  • Create a data-driven process for growing equitable tree canopy so that all can share the benefits of trees.
  • Meet an objective of the City's Equitable Climate Action Plan to develop an urban forest plan.
  • Enable the City to be better prepared to pursue a variety of external funding opportunities, like the $8 million Federal grant the City was awarded this September.
